Learning & Language

May 1, 2015

Hi and welcome to this video. In this video, I want to introduce you to a new understanding of language. The idea is this: when we learn, we change; and when we change, it is because we learnt. This idea is significant because we know that change is inevitable. By associating change with learning, we can choose to control the degree of change in our lives.

When we learn, we change. We change in ways that we may not even understand during the moment of experience. However, that is the power of learning; it allows us to change. Sometimes the change is dramatic and sometimes the change is subtle. Regardless of what kind of learning takes place, change is a given.

Learning appears to be mostly invisible because we tend to accumulate experiences, knowledge, and information and put it in the background of our life. We accumulate experience after experience, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year and so on. Over the course of our lifetime we accumulated plenty of experiences, good, bad and mixed. All these we consider to be the definition of the human being we are.

The thing about learning is that learning is built into our daily interactions. Often it’s piece by piece, interaction by interaction, conversation by conversation. When we learn, we learn mostly through other people. We interact with them by talking and listening to them. We make requests and offers and we commit to them. Our daily interactions with others allows us to communicate and coordinate action in a variety of ways. Learning is coordination. Learning is communication. Effective communication begins with effective learning.

If you have any questions or comments, please share them with the community. Take care and I’ll see you in the next video.
